Netanyahu says Iran will pay for missile barrage, as Israel launches new Beirut strikes

Iran has launched a missile attack on Israel – the Israeli military says around 180 missiles were fired, most of which were intercepted.

One Palestinian man was killed in the West Bank during the barrage, and a school in central Israel and a restaurant in Tel Aviv were hit.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the attack as “a big mistake” and promised Iran “will pay for it.”

Iran said its latest assault was an act of “self-defence” in response to Israel’s “aggressive acts” against its allies, including the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

It also warned Israel against retaliating, with a top military commander threatening to target Israel’s infrastructure if Tehran’s territory is breached.

The escalation follows Israel’s decision to invade Lebanon in a “limited, localised and targeted” ground operation against Hezbollah.

The UN and EU have reiterated calls for a ceasefire, with the UN Security Council due to meet Wednesday.
