Armenian, Azerbaijani FMs to meet in Bratislava soon – OSCE CiO

The Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet in Bratislava soon with the mediation of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák.

“I look forward to hosting the two foreign ministers in Bratislava in the near future,” Mr. Lajčák told the Voice of America.

The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office praised the efforts of the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to resolve the conflict.

“We have seen positive signs this year, a dialogue between leaders and a dialogue at ministerial level. At the same time, there have also been worrying incidents on the contact line that led to human casualties. But now the situation seems to be stable,” he said.

He note, however that “the positive dynamics that we saw during the September meeting in Dushanbe has not yet been transformed into a real breakthrough in resolving the conflict.”

OSCE high-ranking officials attended a conference this week at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington. Referring to the role of international organizations in the prevention of conflicts, Miroslav Lajčák particularly emphasized the importance of political decisions.

“Political decisions are made by leaders, heads of state, ministers. In this case, effective discussion is possible, and if there no dialogue, discussions turn into bureaucratic exercises. We can work at the ambassadorial level, but political decisions are made at a different level,” he stated.
