Illegal use of electricity for crypto mining revealed in Armenia
The Armenian National Security Service (NSS) has revealed an IT firm using an obscene amounts of electricity to mine cryptocurrency.
NSS said in a statement that the firm, not registered as an electricity consumer in Electric Networks of Armenia CJSC, set up a farm on the territory of one of the hydropower plants (HPPs) operating in Armenia and illegally used electricity to mine cryptocurrency.
Over 1.7 million kWh electricity worth about 73 million AMD was illegally consumed over 1.5 years, the Security Service said.
Probe into the case is under way, the amount of damage caused to the state and the HPP is being calculated, measures are being taken to reveal the scope of persons involved in illegal activities.
