Film on Armenia’s Velvet Revolution takes runner-up award at Toronto Festival

I Am Not Alone – Garin Hovannisian’s film on Armenia’s Velvet Revolution has been named first runner-up for the Grolsch People’s Choice Documentary Award in a star-studded doc field including new films by Alex Gibney, Ellen Page, Barbara Kopple, and Alexander Nanau, films about Ron Howard, Truman Capote, and Robert Fisk, and over two dozen films of major consequence from all over the world.

Feras Fayyad’s The Cave received the People’s Choice Documentary Award. Shot from 2016 to 2018, The Cave belongs to the top rank of war films. Syrian director Feras Fayyad (Oscar-nominated for Last Men in Aleppo) takes viewers to a subterranean landscape that feels akin to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max.

With life too dangerous above ground, survivors create a network of secret tunnels under the city of Ghouta, near Damascus, for an underground hospital maintained by women doctors.

I Am Not Alone is a chronicle of the 2018 Armenian revolution that combines gripping front-line reportage with new interviews that describe incidents the cameras could not capture.
