Armenia’s highest court suspends proceedings in ex-President Kocharyan’s case

The Armenian Constitutional Court has decided today to suspend the proceedings in the case of ex-President Robert Kocharyan.

The Constitutional Court said in a statement today that it will apply to the European Court of Human Rights and the Venice Commission for consulting on the constitutionality of Article 300.1 of the Criminal Code of Armenia.

The proceedings in the case will thus be suspended until the Court receives response from the above-mentioned bodies.

Robert Kocharyan is charged with overthrowing constitutional order in March 2008 following a disputed presidential election. At least ten people were killed in clashes between police and protesters on March 1, 2008.
