Russia’s Putin announces bid for 2018 presidential race

Russia’s incumbent president has declared his intention to seek re-election for a second consecutive term in the country’s upcoming 2018 election, Sputnik News reported.

“I will be proposing my candidacy for the position of president of the Russian Federation,” Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday at a meeting with factory workers.

“Russia will move only forward, and no one will ever stop it in its progress.”

Vladimir Putin’s current term expires on May 7, 2018. Mr Putin has been in power since 2000, either as president or prime minister. If he wins the March election he will be eligible to serve until 2024.
