150th birth anniversaries of Komitas and Hovhannes Tumanyan on UNESCO calendar

The 150th birth anniversaries of Komitas and Hovhannes Tumanyan have been included in the UNESCO calendar of anniversary celebrations for the period 2018-2019. The decision was adopted at the 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference, Press Service of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign affairs reported.

The Executive Board approved the proposal submitted by Armenia with the support of France and Germany to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Soghomon Soghomonian, known as Komitas Vardapet, composer, ethnomusicologist, researcher and singer (1869-1935).

The proposal to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of poet, writer and translator Hovhannes Tumanyan (1869- 1923) was submitted by Armenia with the support of Georgia and Russian Federation.

Since 1998 UNESCO has approved 23 bids for celebration of important anniversaries submitted by Armenia.

The organization last celebrated the 350th anniversary of the first Armenian printed Bible and the 200th anniversary of Hovhannes Ayvazovski.
