Edward Nalbandian attends meeting of CSTO Foreign Ministers

On September 20, Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian, who is in New York to participate in the  72nd session of the UN General Assembly, participated in the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization member states.

The Foreign Ministers touched upon the process of implementation of the decisions of the Yerevan session of the Collective Security Council.

During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on the ongoing activities of the Organization and discussed issues related to cooperation within the framework of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly.

In his remarks, Edward Nalbandian noted that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Collective Security Treaty, moreover, this year marks the 25th anniversary of membership to the United Nations for the majority of the CSTO member states. The Foreign Minister of Armenia attached highlighted the importance for further increase of the role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, implementation of the sustainable development goals, fight against terrorism and addressing new challenges and threats.

Minister Nalbandian expressed Armenia’s support for a number of joint initiatives to be presented by the CSTO member states for the discussion at the UN General Assembly.

On the results of the meeting, the Foreign Ministers of the CSTO member states adopted Statements on “Countering International Terrorism,” “Ensuring Comprehensive Stability in the World,” and “The Situation in Afghanistan and the Threat Posed by the Growing Strength of International Terrorist and Extremist Organisations in its Northern Provinces.”

Ministers discussed the agenda and timetable of forthcoming meetings of CSTO statutory bodies.
