MEP Frank Engel defends his trip to Nagorno Karabakh

MEP Frank Engel has defended his trip to Nagorno Karabakh earlier this year, POLITICO reports.

In February, Frank Engel, a member of the EPP from Luxembourg, went to Nagorno-Karabakh in the South Caucasus as part of a friendship group with three other MEPs to observe a referendum vote on changes to the constitution.

Engel defended the trip, saying he and the other referendum observers issued a joint statement on their return declaring the vote to be the result of “a democratic process.”

Following Engel’s visit, the MEP said he received an arrest warrant from the Azerbaijani authorities who tried to include his name on an Interpol list.

“I say what I want, I am an elected official and I defend positions the European Parliament is incapable of defending in the Nagorno-Karabakh region,” Engel said.
