Aram Ateshyan’s powers as Patriarchal Vicar terminated

The Spiritual Council of the Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul has terminated the powers of Patriarchal Vicar Aram Ateshyan.

The Council voted 22 to 2 today to terminate Archbishop Ateshyan’s powers as General Vicar, Chairman of the Spiritual Council Sahak Mashalyan told Agos.

Ateshyan said on 24 May that he was ready to quit and  invited Patriarch’s Locum Tenens Archbishop Karekin Bekciyan to Istanbul, but the Patriarchal Vicar had not resigned from the post.

At a meeting with Karekin Bekcian on Saturday, 24 June Atesyan stated that he did not consider officially resigning from his position of Patriarchal Vicar.
