Turkey shoots down Russian warplane on Syria border

Turkish warplanes are reported to have shot down an unidentified military aircraft near the border with Syria, the BBC reports.

A Turkish military official told the Reuters news agency that Turkish F-16s had fired on the jet after warning it that it was violating Turkish airspace.

Turkish media broadcast video footage of a plane crashing into mountains near the border with Hatay province.

According to reports in the Russian media, Russian jet Su-24 has crashed on the Turkish-Syrian border, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

“Su-24 of the Russian aviation group has crashed in the Syrian Arab Republic after alleged fire from the ground,” the Russian Defense Ministry stated.
