Darchinyan wins 40th career bout with ninth-round knockout

Vic Darchinyan registered the fortieth victory of his remarkable career at the weekend.

Just over a month after his 39th birthday, the former flyweight and bantamweight champion stopped Juan Jimenez in the ninth round of a super-bantamweight bout in Chetumal, Mexico, on Saturday night.

Darchinyan, who was born in Armenia but had his first 21 professional fights in Australia, won the 48th fight of his career by defeating a 23-year-old opponent.

He has lost seven times and drew once, and fought the best in several divisions during the past ten years. Known as Raging Bull, he also beat Evans Mbamba and Mzukisi Sikali of South Africa and Joseph Agbeko of Ghana.

Darchinyan won the Australian flyweight title in 2001, the IBF flyweight title in 2004, the IBO title in 2005, the IBO super-flyweight title in 2007, the WBA “super” and WBC super-flyweight titles in 2009 and the IBO bantamweight title in 2010 but lost in a challenge for the WBA featherweight title last year.
