The suspect in the mass killing in Gyumri was to be prosecuted by Armenian law-enforcement bodies and in accordance with the legislature of the Republic of Armenia, lawyer Norayr Norikyan told reporters today.

According to him, the issue is regulated by the agreements on the stationing of the Russian military base in Armenia and the reciprocal legal assistance connected with the activity of the base signed between the two countries in 1995-1997.

The lawyer considers that reference to Article 61.1 of the Russian Constitution is absurd. “This vicious crime has been committed on the territory of the Republic of Armenia, where the Russian Constitution cannot be applied.”

Norayr Norikyan says the murderer should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, up to life imprisonment.
