Steven Gerrard leaving Liverpool at end of season

Liverpool have confirmed that Steven Gerrard is to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, ESPNFC reports.

Gerrard, 34, has spent his entire career at Anfield, making his first-team debut in 1998, and has won trophies including the Champions League, UEFA Cup and two FA Cups.

However, the midfielder, who retired from England duty following this summer’s World Cup, has now decided to move on and is expected to seal a transfer to Major League Soccer.

Gerrard did not confirm his destination but said he would not play for a team that could compete against the Reds.

In a statement on Liverpool’s official website, Gerrard said: “This has been the toughest decision of my life and one which both me and my family have agonised over for a good deal of time.

“I am making the announcement now so that the manager and the team are not distracted by stories or speculation about my future.
