Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a man of influence. The young billionaire does not shy away from answering the trickiest questions about his company. During his second public Q&A on Thursday, Zuckerberg answered several long-standing questions about Facebook. Among other things, Zuckerberg explained why his social media site had no “dislike” button, the International Business Times reports.
Zuckerberg said that a dislike button would bring negativity to the site, which he aims to prevent. “And, you know, some people have asked for a Dislike button because they want to be able to say ‘That thing isn’t good’. And that’s not something that we think is good for the world. So we’re not going to build that. I don’t think there needs to be a voting mechanism about whether posts are good or bad. I don’t think that’s socially very valuable or good for the community to help people share the important moments in their lives,” he said.
To further emphasize the lack of dislike button on the site, Zuckerberg explained that people can always comment to share their views as an alternative to the Like button. The Like button is designed to help users to sympathize and empathize with their friends’ emotions. But in a situation where someone shares news of a demise or loss, Liking the post isn’t the suitable response.
Zuckerberg said the company considered the dislike option but dismissed it due to the negativity it draws towards the site.
“Giving people the power to do that in more ways with more emotions would be powerful, but we need to figure out the right way to do it so it ends up being a force for good, not a force for bad and demeaning the posts that people are putting out there,” Zuckerberg added.
