International response to Armenian helicopter downing was a step forward: Sharmazanov

Vice-Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Edward Sharmazanov sees clear accusations against Azerbaijan in the statements condemning the downing of the Armenian helicopter.

“I think this was not the right format of condemnation. There were statements, where we saw clear accusations against Azerbaijan, although the diplomatic correctness was maintained. I don’t think theses condemnations were like the previous ones with an equation mark between the conflicting parties. These statements were a step forward, but I think that some messages could be stronger,” Sharmazanov told Public Radio of Armenia.

At the same time, the Vice-Speaker said he was content with the reaction of the CSTO. “I think CSTO Secretary General Nikolay Bordyuzha’s response was correct, complete and clearly addressed to Azerbaijan. He made it clear that the downing of the helicopter could lead to escalation. Unlike the previous cases, the CSTO responded very clearly this time,” Sharmazanov said.

The Vice-Speaker hopes that the international pressure on Azerbaijan will further grow, taking into consideration that with these actions Baku is challenging the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the wider international community.
