Cyprus House Speaker addresses international community over Kessab

After the recent protest letters sent out by the Representative of the Armenian Community in the Cyprus Parliament MP Vartkes Mahdessian condemning the attacks on the historically Armenian City of Kessab in Syria, the President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Yiannakis Omirou reacted immediately by sending letters to Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament; Abdelwahad Radi, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union; Assunção Esteves, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean; Sen. Francesco Maria Amoruso – President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean;
Sergei Popov – President of the General Assembly of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy and Anastasios Nerantzis, Secretary General of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy.

In the letter Mr. Yiannakis Omirou demands them to look into the issue immediately, so that Turkey ceases to facilitate extremists in any way and takes action to end these attacks launched from within its territory.

Furthermore, Mr. Omirou calls for concerted efforts so that the Armenian population of the Kessab region can return to its homes in conditions of safety and security as soon as possible.

Finally, the letters urges the international community to act decisively so that talks and negotiations bear fruit and a peaceful resolution is finally reached. A resolution which will not only end bloodshed and people’s suffering but will insure that the rights of all ethnic and religious groups and minorities in the region are respected and safeguarded.
