The situation in the region is not calm ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, expert of Turkish studies Hakob Chakryan told reporters today. He considers that both the global and regional situation should be calm for solving the issues connected with the Armenian Genocide. Chakryan noted that Turkey will continue its policy of denial and added that the commission created in Armenia does not work effectively in this situation.

However, according to the expert’s assessment, there have been certain positive moves connected with the Armenian Genocide – German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s call to Turkish PM Erdogan to face the history and Hollade’s statement in Turkey.

According to Hakob Chakryan, these two statements can lead to one conclusion – a new process is starting ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, and if the German Chancellor and the French President pursue their statements, there will be a considerable progress on the issue.

The expert considers that US recognition of the Armenian Genocide is extremely necessary for the process to be complete. The steps of Israel and England will follow, he said.

Chakryan says Turkey is engaged in solving its own domestic problems; the situation has started ahead of the local self-government elections. He is confident that Turkey will continue its policy of denial.

Hakob Chakryan voiced concern that under these conditions Armenia is doing nearly nothing on the threshold of the Genocide centennial.
