Defense Ministry comments on the decision to give additional space to Russian military base

Spokesman for the Armenian Ministry of Defense Artsrun Hovhannisyan has commented on the decision of the government to allocate more space to the Russian military base in Armenia.

“The Russian military base in Armenia is located in different areas called military townships. The place of location of the military base has changed several times connected with the change of the military base’s objectives towards ensuring the security of the Republic of Armenia,” the Spokesman said.

According to Hovhannisyan, the Russian base will temporarily be given additional space to host helicopter pads, administrative buildings and fuel-storage facilities, which are currently not used by the Armenian Armed Forces. The government approved the draft agreement at a sitting on November 21.

The Speaker noted also that besides areas temporarily given to the Russian military base, there are areas used both by Armenian and Russian parties.
