Ukraine Parliament rejects bills to release Tymoshenko

Ukraine’s parliament on Thursday voted against all six bills that would have allowed jailed ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko to go abroad for treatment, dealing a potentially fatal to blow to the chances of signing an association deal with the EU this month, AFP reports.

The Supreme Rada rejected the bills that had been put forward on the treatment of convicts abroad, after they failed to gain the support of President Viktor Yanukovych’s ruling Regions Party. Opposition lawmakers shouted “shame” as the bills were rejected.

The EU is demanding her release as one of the conditions for signing an EU-Ukraine trade and partnership agreement in Vilnius, Lithuania, which starts on 28 November.
