US-based skier seeks Olympic spot with Armenia in Sochi

American American skier Arman Serebrakian hopes to represent Armenia in the Olympics as a downhill slalom skier.

Serebrakian, who grew up in Novato and graduated from Marin Catholic High in 2005, is taking a respite from his postgraduate medical studies at Temple University in Philadelphia.

For the next several months, Serebrakian is focusing on becoming a doctor of downhill ski racing, the Marin Independent Journal writes.

Serebrakian, a four-time National Collegiate Athletic Association skiing championship top-10 finisher for Colorado, has his sights set on competing in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The son of Armenian immigrant parents, Serebrakian has a dual-citizenship and accepted an invitation from the Armenia Ski Federation to join its national ski team.

Interestingly, his sister, Ani, made the Armenian national ski team and competed at the Olympics in Vancouver, although she went unplaced.

Serebrakian will spend the next few months competing in international events in New Zealand, Australia and Europe. Both he and his coach agree he will have little trouble making a rapid ascent in the world rankings.
