Zaruhi Postanjyan to be expelled from Armenia’s delegation to PACE

“The free expression of the political opinion is a compulsory condition for launching proper political dialogue, but it’s not an absolute right,” Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan has said.

According to him, under Article 66 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, “a Deputy, may not be prosecuted and held liable for actions arising from his/her status, including the opinions expressed by him/her, provided these are not insulting or defamatory.”

“Therefore, this right is restricted, when its use diverges from the real objective of launching free political dialogue,” Abrahamyan said.

“Taking into consideration Zaruhi Postanjyan’s behavior at the plenary session of PACE, after consulting with all factions represented in the National Assembly I have decided to make changes in the Armenian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly,” he said.

On October 2 Zaruhi Postanjyan asked President Serzh Sargsyan whether he had gambled and lost 70 million Euros in a European casino. In response to that the President said he had never been to any casino in Europe.

Postanjyan’s question has been widely discussed an criticized in the social media and political circles.
