James Warlick: Solution impossible without political will and mutual concessions

After assuming office, I have arrived here to listen and learn, newly appointed US Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick told reporters in Yerevan.

The Co-Chair said the peoples of the region deserve a solution to the Karabakh issue that will bring peace and prosperity. “The solution that has long been negotiated within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group is not easy to achieve. And this is impossible without the political will of the leaders, concessions from all sides and the understanding that it is in the interests of the generations to come,” he said.

Mr. Warlick reminded that the principles of the Helsinki Final Act –  non-use of force, territorial integrity and the right of peoples to self-determination – remain in the basis of the Karabakh settlement. The Co-Chair stressed the importance of confidence-building and security measures.

Will Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union affect the process of settlement of the Karabakh conflict? Is there a danger that Russia could act separately to  solve the issue?

James Warkick said he’s looking forward to working with his Russian colleague Igor Popov. He hopes they will be able to help each other find a peaceful solution.
