Latvia’s Riga Castle damaged by blaze

A fire has caused serious damage to the roof of Latvia’s Riga Castle, a medieval fortress and the country’s presidential residence, RIA Novosti reports.

The fire broke out late on Thursday, damaging over 3,200 square meters of the historic building. Firefighters had managed to get the blaze under control by Friday morning.

The castle, which also houses Latvia’s National History Museum, was built in the mid-14th century.

President Andris Berzins was not staying at the castle when fire broke out, due to ongoing renovation work.

No casualties were reported in the incident as of Friday morning. Latvia’s Culture Minister Žaneta Jaunzeme-Grendetold said on Friday none of the National History Museum’s artifacts had been destroyed but some of them had been seriously damaged.
