Levon Aronian wins Alekhine Memorial

Armenian GM Levon Aronian defeated GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France in the final round of the Alexander Alekhine Memorial and became the winner of the tournament.

Both Gelfand and Aronian ended on 5.5 points, but the Israeli fell behind  on tiebreak.

Aronian said he was glad to win the Alekhine Memorial, who is his favorite chess player.

“The victory in such a strong tournament is a great honor to me, especially considering that Alekhine is my favorite chess player. I’m very pleased and happy,” Aronian told journalists.

Boris Gelfand (Isr, 5.5) drew with V Anand (Ind, 5); Levon Aronian (Arm, 5.5) beat Maxime Vachier-Lagraev (Fra, 4.5); Peter Svidler (Rus, 3) drew with Laurent Fressinet (Fra, 4.5); Nikita Vituigov (Rus, 4.5) drew with Ding Liren (Chn, 3.5); Michael Adams (Eng, 4.5) playing Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 3.5).
