UN and the National Library of Armenia mark the completion of the “Yerevan World Book Capital” year and the World Book and Copyright Day

Representatives of the UN Office in Armenia together with the management of the National Library of Armenia inaugurated today the newly renovated venue of the UN Depository Library, which is hosted by the National Library of Armenia (NLA).

The event is dedicated to the completion of the year long programme “Yerevan World Book Capital 2012”, and to mark the World Book and Copyright Day within the framework of the Library Week in Armenia.

UN Depository Libraries are established in many countries and their aim is to provide the public with information about the UN, about what is going on in the world and the UN Member States.  Armenia hosts two UN Depositories.

The UN Depository Library stock at the NLA contains more than ten thousand UN documents, books, journals, posters and multi-media materials. They are mainly in Armenian, English and Russian languages. The stock is continuously being updated by the UN Headquarters and the UN Department of Public Information Office in Yerevan.

Maria Dotsenko, UN Department of Public Information Representative in Armenia said: “The UN is pleased to support the dedication and enthusiasm of Armenians and the Library management to the promotion of UN values and publications among Armenians. Thanks to their efforts, thousands of scholars, journalists, students and others have access to the latest UN-related materials and information. I am sure that in this new, bigger and brighter space, the UN Depository will serve its primary role – to help Armenians to learn more about UN”, she added.

“Our cooperation with the UN is very productive.  We are sure the new venue of UN Depository Library will serve as an additional stimulus to raise the awareness of UN. We look forward to continue our cooperation with the UN Armenia Office”, said Tigran Zargaryan, the Director of the National Library of Armenia.

Representatives from UN Corners, librarians, students, researchers, civil society activists and media took part at the event and learned more about the UN through the UN publications’ exhibition also displayed at the UN Depository Reading Room.

The National Library of Armenia hosts one of two UN Depositories in Armenia.  The UN Depository at the NLA was established in 1997 and another UN Depository was opened in the Yerevan State University in 1995. Both UN Depositories were established with the help of the UN Department of Public Information.
