New Pope urged Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide back in 2006

Seven years ago, the newly-elected Pope Francis urged Turkey to unconditionally recognize the Armenian Genocide.

During events marking the 91st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Buenos Aires, then Archbishop of Buenos Aires Jorge Mario Bergoglio urged Turkey to recognize the Genocide as the “gravest crime of Ottoman Turkey against the Armenian people and the entire humanity.”

The billowing white smoke began spilling out of the chimney at approximately 7:06 p.m. local time, indicating the Cardinals had reached consensus on a candidate in the second round of balloting Wednesday afternoon.

This means that at least two thirds, or 77 of the 115 cardinals gathered in conclave since Tuesday afternoon were united in their support for the candidate who has now become the 265th successor of St Peter.
