Memorial service for the victims of the Armenian massacres of Sumgait in Geneva

A memorial service for the victims of the Armenian massacres of Sumgait of February 27-29, 1988 was offered at St. Hakob Armenian Church of Geneva. A wreath was laid at the cross-stone in memory of the victims. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Swiss Armenian community.

After the service the “Common genocide” documentary was screened at the community center. Reverend Father Hayrik Hovhannisyan, Pastor of St. Hakob Church, and Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Switzerland Satenik Abgaryan delivered speeches.

Satenik Abgaryan noted that the Sumgait massacres were the continuation of the decades-long Azerbaijani policy of ethnic cleansing. The Azerbaijan authorities responded with cruel violence to the claim of the people of Nagorno Karabakh to the right of self-determination, which, however, did not break the will of the people who rose for their independence. The development and prosperity of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic is a tribute to the memory of the Sumgait victims.
