Official Ankara says its congratulation to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on his reelection goes in line with Turkish state traditions. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided explanations to Azerbaijan after an Azerbaijani official earlier demanded a clarification over President Abdullah Gul’s message to this Armenian counterpart.
“The congratulation, which was issued to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan in connection with his reelection as President of the Republic of Armenia, was made in accordance with our state traditions, as it is done after the publication of the election results in other countries,” reads the Turkish Ministry’s reply to Azerbaijan’s APA news agency.
In its statement the Turkish MFA reminded that Turkey recognized Armenia’s independence on December 16, 1991.
