Malatya street named after Hrant Dink

A street in the eastern province of Malatya, where the late Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink was born, has been named “Hrant Dink Street” in memory of the slain journalist, Today’s Zaman reported.

The street, now named after Dink, was previously Çavuşoğlu Street. A number of other streets have also been renamed.

The decision to change the street names was made jointly by the Malatya Municipality and the City Council. Malatya Mayor Ahmet Çakır said his municipality chose the names of people who were born and raised in the province and who are also well-known among Turks so that they would be immortalized in the streets of Malatya forever.

“One of these streets is the one where Dink was born. We thought that it would be appropriate to name the street after Dink.”

In the meantime, the Malatya Municipality has announced that it has begun restoring two old Armenian churches in the province. The municipality is planning to complete the restoration of the Taşhoron and Venk churches by the end of 2013.
