Olympic Champion Vladimir Yengibaryan passed away aged 81

Olympic boxing gold medalist Vladimir Yengibaryan has died in Los Angeles at the age of 81, the Armenian national Olympic committee informs.

Yengibaryan won gold for the Soviet Union in the welterweight class at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne and was also a three-time European champion at light welterweight and welterweight between 1953 and 1959.

He moved to the U.S. in the 1990s after spending 36 years as head of Armenia’s national boxing academy.

The Olympic committee said a memorial service would be held Sunday in Armenia and that he would be buried in the U.S.
